On August 15, we observe the minor feast day called the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. Dormition means “falling asleep”, and it honors the end of Mary’s earthly life, and her being taken up into heaven. As we commemorate Mary’s life of faithful obedience, we celebrate the hope we have in Christ, that the end of our lives on earth is merely a “falling asleep” in him (1 Corinthians 15:18), before we awake up after his likeness and arise in the glory of the resurrection.
