Carols

11 a.m. Lessons & Carols (Fourth Sunday in Advent)

This Sunday is the last in Advent, when we traditionally offer a special service of Lessons & Carols.

What is a service of Lessons & Carols?
Beginning in the 19th century, services of Lessons and Carols for Christmas and Advent have become part of the season’s traditions of worship, and most of them (including our own) are based on the famous Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols sung on Christmas Eve at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge, since 1918, and broadcast worldwide since 1928. In the lessons we trace the promise of Christ, “the seed of the woman”, first made to Eve, then again to Abraham, and third by the prophet Isaiah. The lessons end with the annunciation to the Virgin Mary, and his conception by the Holy Ghost. Appropriately, each lesson is followed by a carol or hymn celebrating the coming of the Redeemer, in which we experience anew the wonder, joy and hope of his coming in the flesh for our salvation. As we trace the promise of his coming, we prepare ourselves to receive him in Holy Communion on Christmas, and look with hope to his coming again in glory.

After this service, join us for a special Coffee Hour featuring delicious eggnog!

St. John's first building was consecrated in 1843. When the congregation outgrew this building, the construction was undertaken of the current building (which is situated in Madison Square, across from the historic Green-Meldrim House, now the church's parish house). The building was designed by Calvin N. Otis of Buffalo, New York, and was consecrated in May 1853.
