donate appreciated stock
You can donate appreciated stock. Please contact Janice Woods (912.232.1251) for the information you will need to provide to your financial advisor to affect the transfer of the shares. Please note that your contribution will be credited at the average of the high and low values on the date of the donation and you will avoid paying income tax on the capital gains.
Qualified Charitable Donation (QCD)
If you are at least 70½ years old, you can make a Qualified Charitable Donation (QCD) from your IRA (but not your pension or a company retirement plan). You will need to provide your financial advisor with the church’s address (One W. Macon St., Savannah, GA 31401) as the donation must come directly from your IRA to the church. If you are subject to a required minimum distribution (RMD), so long as you make the contribution before withdrawing all your RMD for the year, your donation will count as part of your RMD. The advantage of a QCD is that, while you cannot deduct it on schedule A, it reduces your retirement income and thus your adjusted gross income (AGI), an amount that is used to determine your eligibility for several deductions on your tax return and the cost of your Medicare premiums. The lower your AGI, the more likely you are to qualify for various deductions and the less you are likely to pay for Medicare.
