Sunday Worship at St. John’s Church

All services at St. John’s are based on the biblical and historic tradition of worship transmitted in the 1928 Book of Common Prayer.  On Christmas, Holy Week (the week before Easter) and Easter, the pattern of service changes.

Based on the ancient tradition of Morning Praise (“Mattins”), this service is centered on the reading of the Word of God in Holy Scripture, the singing of God’s praise, together with prayers for his grace, a sermon and congregational singing of hymns and canticles.  In Choral Mattins, the choir sings more elaborate music from the Anglican choral tradition.

On a few special days of the Church’s Year (Michaelmas Sunday, All Saints Sunday, Christmas Midnight, Epiphany Sunday, Easter, and Whitsunday) the Sung Eucharist with sermon and congregational hymns, is celebrated with greater dignity and richness of music and ceremonial (including incense) and is called a Solemn Eucharist. Located in the Church.
